GIANT SNOWFLAKE

It's winter, it's snow time.
Well, it should be snow time.
To have always „some snow“ around you in winter, you could crochet a few snowflakes yourself, as decoration on the window or wall or hanging down from the ceiling...

Usually snowflakes are crocheted using very fine yarn and the hook size 1,5 or 2. But using XXL yarn and hook size 10, 12 or even 15, the result is amazing. The snowflake will be huge. It's really impressive and perfect decoration element for your home in wintertime.

THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED:
  • t-shirt yarn, for instance Hoooked Zpagetti - 120m/850g, recycled yarn in white, light grey, blue or lilac
  • crochet hook 12 or 15
  • scissors.
THE SIZE OF THE READY SNOWFLAKE:
diameter approx 40cm.

chain stitch (õhksilmus/ Luftmasche)
crochet stitch (kinnissilmus/ feste Masche)
double crochet (ühekordne sammas/ einfaches Stäbchen)

THE PATTERN:
The hole snowflake is crocheted in rounds.
Crochet loosely.

Crochet 6 chain stitches, connect with a slip stitch to the 1st chain stitch.
Round 1
3 chain stitches, 17 double crochets through the 6-chain-stitches-ring, connect with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain stitch.

Round 2
3 chain stitches,
*5 chain stitches, skip 2 stitches from last round, 1 double crochet* repeat this rapport 5 times,
1 slip stitch to the 3rd chain stitch.

Round 3
3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet in the 3rd chain stitch of the last round, 1 crochet stitch around the 5-chain-stitches-loop,
*2 double crochets in the double crochet of the last round, 5 chain stitches, 2 double crochets in the same double crochet of the last round, 1 crochet stitch around the next 5-chain-stitches-loop* repeat this rapport 5 times,
2 double crochets in the slip stitch of the last round, 5 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch to the 3rd chain stitch.

Round 4
1 chain stitch, 4 crochet stitches,
*around the 5-chain-stitches-loop of the last round
(1 crochet stitch, 7 chain stitches, 1 crochet stitch, 5 chain stitches, 1 crochet stitch, 10 chain stitches, 1 crochet stitch, 5 chain stitches, 1 crochet stitch, 7 chain stitches, 1 crochet stitch),
5 crochet stitches*
repeat this rapport 6 times leaving the last 5 crochet stitches out,
slip stitch to the 3rd chain stitch.
Hide the yarn ends. Stretch the snowflake in position.
Hang it and enjoy the winter feeling.
